The final decade of the British Mandate over Palestine saw the conflict escalate and take on an increasingly Islamic character. Violence broke out in 1921 and intensified in 1929, centered in the very places where Arabs and Jews had lived peacefully together since the days of the “Old Yishuv.”

The flames of violence were further fanned by the growing use of holy sites as symbols and targets in the emerging conflict.
