Autonomies - Episode 1
51m
Elka Rein’s world shatters when a nurse confesses that the baby Elka was told had died nine years earlier is actually alive. The nurse admits she accidentally suffocated another infant and switched the babies to cover up her mistake. Across the border in the secular state, Batia and Asher Luzzato learn that the daughter they have raised is not biologically theirs. As DNA tests confirm the truth, a national custody battle erupts between the secular couple and the Haredi Reins. Meanwhile, Yoyne Broide, an undertaker and small time smuggler in the Haredi Autonomy, is drawn into the unfolding crisis. After a chance encounter with Anna, a grieving jazz musician, Broide finds himself torn between forbidden love and mounting pressure from the powerful Rebbe of Kreinitz, who asks him to kidnap the girl rather than trust the secular court. When the judge rules the child will remain with her secular parents, riots erupt in the Autonomy, and the fragile peace between the two societies begins to crack.
