Last Shabbat

Last Shabbat

Set in Paris, just before the pandemic, this feature film unfolds on a Friday night Shabbat in the apartment of a recently deceased Sephardic grandmother. The family gathers there one last time before the home is vacated: Esther, a widow with seven children, and her brother Rabbi Samuel, a respected spiritual leader. Around the table, warmth and tradition meet with tension, as faith collides with modern life. Flashbacks reveal the struggles of Esther’s sons—torn between love for their non-Jewish partners and rejection by religious authorities—and the pressure faced by her daughters, burdened with expectations of preserving Jewish continuity. At the heart of it all is Ethan, an IDF officer on leave, whose perspective ties together questions of identity, belonging, and survival in the face of rising antisemitism. By night’s end, an unexpected revelation makes this gathering truly the last Shabbat.
