The big successes of Israeli cinema in the 1960’s and the 1970’s make way for a period of confusion and disappointment in the 1980’s. But something new awakens: the murder of Prime Minister Rabin, on one hand, and the development of commercial television and filmmaking schools on the other hand, bring to life a new, very creative generation of creators. Dozens of movies are produced every year, and the creators are more diverse: more women, more religious people, more Arabs, as well as new genres. Films such as ‘Late Marriage’, ‘The Band’s Visit’, ‘Waltz with Bashir’ and ‘Footnote’ become international success, and Israeli directors become known in the whole world. Israeli cinema keeps reacting to the social, military and political reality, although somewhat in delay. The Lebanon War, the murder of Rabin, the Israeli Palestinian conflict and the multiple social gaps make way for controversial films that receive applause as well as criticism.
