Apples and Oranges

Apples and Oranges

Set against the backdrop of Israel’s shifting history from the 1960s to the early 2000s, this documentary traces the rise and decline of the Kibbutz volunteer movement. From the idealism of young foreigners seeking communal life, through the cultural clashes of sex, drugs, and rock & roll within a socialist framework, to the impact of wars, politics, and disillusionment, the film weaves together personal letters, archival footage, and candid interviews. Stories of love, scandal, tragedy, and political awakening reveal how volunteering in Israel evolved — and how, by the 21st century, it crossed borders into new, unexpected destinations.
